It’s Time

its time

Let me say it again: There’s never been a better time in history to be a person who wants to make a difference in the world.

You have dreams for humanity … ways you want to make this world an even better place. And all around you, people are longing for something to believe in. They’re hungry for hope. They’re waiting for you to turn their attention from needs to resources, from problems to possibilities, from despair to confidence.

The opportunities are endless. And yet so many of us hold ourselves back — in our desire to be “realistic,” to protect ourselves from disappointment, to avoid playing the fool.

We could tell ourselves the soothing story that what we want is just plain not possible, and besides, even if it were, we couldn’t make enough of a difference to matter. (Be assured, even the most courageous have these doubts.)

But an inner voice calls us to fulfill our potential, to live a meaningful life, to make the contribution to the world that only we can make. So we strengthen that part of ourselves and move forward toward the world we want.

After all, as Steve Jobs put it so poignantly when he spoke to the 2005 graduating class at Stanford University …

Almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure — these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. … There is no reason not to follow your heart.
